Hi everybody, Evan here. I’m gonna be posting a little bit about each of the five segments, starting today with Charlotte on the Rebound, which was the first written, the first produced, and is the first featured in the anthology.
Jenn wrote Charlotte, I directed, and she dp’d and edited. It’s a thriller, shot in black and white, with a strong 1950s influence on the look and tone. The story follows Charlotte, a cold and controlling woman with a dark secret, her rebellious daughter Ava, and Charlotte’s new boyfriend Gene, whom Ava comes to suspect may be the infamous Panty Hose Killer.
Jenn tailored the role of Gene to Darren Kelly, an actor we’ve worked with on several previous shorts, because she knew he has a dark side that he rarely gets to exercise.
While Jennifer was working on the script, I had the good fortune to direct Aidan Rees in a class project, and could tell almost immediately that she’d be a perfect fit for the role of Ava.
That left only Charlotte to be cast. We saw several very, very talented women for this role, but when Juli Cuccia walked into the room, it was almost as though the character we’d envisioned had just emerged into real life.
This was a hugely exciting, rewarding shoot, and that early sense of success was key to keeping us motivated through the challenge of shooting five different movies in such quick progression.
